Thailand is planning to collect a 300-baht ‘land entry fee’ on all foreign tourists under the “Amazing Thailand New Chapter” tourism boost concept, a government spokesperson reported today, January 12th.

Spokesman Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana told the Associated Press that the Ministry of Tourism and Sports and Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) would jointly promote Thai tourism under the concept of “Amazing Thailand New Chapter”, starting this January.

The project would also emphasize a new economic model which incorporates concepts of the bio-economy, circular economy, and green economy in order to contribute to sustainable tourism and enhance the tourism profits to local communities.

Moreover, during the second quarter of 2022 (April-June), the authorities would start collecting what the government called a ‘land entry fee’ of 300 baht/person on international tourists and would be used on tourism management and development as well as insurance for the tourists while traveling in Thailand, providing maximum coverage of 1 million baht or of 5 hundred thousand baht for medical expenses.

The fee is initially planned to be included in tourist airfare in case of air travel. The method for land travel is under consideration, according to the spokesperson.

The Ministry of Tourism and Sports also estimated that Thailand would receive income from tourism at around 1.3-1.8 trillion baht in 2022. About 5-15 million foreigners are expected to travel to Thailand, generating approximately 800 billion baht of revenue, despite the current wave of Omicron variants across the globe.

For domestic travel, about 160 million people are expected and would be generating an income of about 700 billion baht this year. Meanwhile, the government continues to come up with tourism boosting projects to encourage Thai people to travel domestically.
